Libochovice Castle

1557

Libochovice Castle is a popular tourist destination thanks to its romantic location on the banks of the Ohře River, with the ruins of Házmburk Castle and the volcanic hills of the České středohoří Mountains in the background.
Libochovice Castle stands on the site of an older Gothic fortress, which Jan of Lobkowicz had rebuilt into a single-story Renaissance castle between 1560 and 1564. The later owner, Gundakar Dietrichstein, who bought the burnt-out castle from the Šternberk family, undertook extensive Baroque reconstruction between 1682 and 1690. The architectural design was by the famous Italian architect Antonio Porta.

In 1685, an ornamental garden was established next to the castle, which also includes greenhouses. The interior installation displays collections of rare tapestries, glass, porcelain, and unique Baroque tiled stoves. Italian stuccoers and sculptor Jan Brokoff contributed to the decoration of the interiors and the main Saturn Hall, which spans two floors. The castle is also significant as the birthplace of the famous Czech scientist Jan Evangelista Purkyně, who has his own exhibition here.

Tours The
castle offers a basic tour, during which visitors can walk through almost all centuries. There is also an exhibition on the life and work of J. E. Purkyně and freely accessible gardens and castle park.
